the diggin sounds like an allergy, infact all of it sounds like allergic reactions. think back to the times you can remember when he stopped eating. were there any plants flowering in your house or outside the window? did someone paint? new areosol room freshener?
keep a journal of what happens everytime you see him start this behavior, weather, food, season.. see if there is a pattern
Add: I have one cat that is allergic to fresh cut grass. We have to close the windows when me mow or she chews her hair off, runs a temp, refuses to eat for a week.. and another that is allergic to corn in food References :
I think you should put him down he is suffering from pain and if he’s put down he wont feel the pain just think of it as saving and helping him feel better inside and out.
Those decisions are hard for me when I have to choose. I love every animal. But I think you’ll have to put him down I am sorry. But its best that he don’t go through anymore pain. References :
I think you have to do what is best for the cat. Sounds like he is really suffering and you have done all you can do. I know it will hurt YOU but it sounds best for your cat. I recently had to have my cat put down and it hurts terribly, but it was the only thing I could for her that I had not already done. References :
i understand how u feel i had almost the same situation once before and i know it hurts but think to yourself what if u were in the cats position and in the pain that he/she is in would u want to keep on going knowing that there is no way to fix the problem or to get better or would u want to be given a chance to be happy again and comfortable again, you will never Truly loose you kitty because no matter what that kitty will be in your heart and memories forever and even if he/she is put down just remember that they are happy and that they will always be with you because u loved them and they will never forget that. Its allergies!!! This is EXACTLY what happened to Fitz, err, my Mom’s cat. We found out he is highly allergic to certain clay litters, certain ashy cat foods, and fleas. If you let your cat go outside he may be getting 1 or 2 flea bites that are causing his skin to get irritated and he is pulling out his hair. Fitz was practically bald when we got it all figured out. He ended up getting an infection from the scratching and was getting lethargic. We have him on Promeris for cats as a flea med, Iams multi cat, and Scoop Away litter and he’s all better!
Seriously, its allergies. But I would doubt its from a plant or a cleaner. Typically its something that cat comes in contact with daily. Also, allergies can come up randomly even if nothing changes, so I would experiment with different litters and foods before putting him down. Also, keep him indoors for a while to limit exposure to fleas. References : I’ve had a cat that behaved like this

maybe you should just take it to the vet instead of killing the cat. i dont know why people do that to animals.

Give him a few more weeks and see if there is any improvement. if there is not, unfortunately, the most humane thing to do is put him to sleep.
best wishes and good luck,
matt
